Every year, thousands of young people transition out of foster care and into adulthood carrying far less than they deserve. For some, everything they own is packed into a trash bag.

At The Knighten Project, we believe their next chapter should begin differently.

Through Packing with Purpose 2026, we replace trash bags with brand-new suitcases filled with essentials, encouragement, and hope—reminding teens and young adults aging out of foster care that they are seen, valued, supported, and worthy of stepping into their future with dignity.

What “Packing with Purpose” Means

It’s more than what’s packed; it’s what the suitcase represents.

A suitcase represents movement.

A new beginning.

A place for their belongings that says, “What you own matters. Where you’re going matters. You matter.”

At The Knighten Project, our mission goes beyond providing items. We want every young person we serve to step into adulthood with greater dignity, confidence, hope, and direction.

Through Packing with Purpose, something as ordinary as a suitcase becomes a symbol of possibility and a reminder that they do not have to enter their next chapter alone.

This is more than luggage. It is dignity restored, hope renewed, and a reminder that their future still holds purpose.

What’s Inside Each Suitcase

We pack essentials, but we also pack encouragement.

Each brand-new suitcase is thoughtfully prepared with items that can help a young person as they begin living more independently.

Suitcases may include:

Hygiene and personal care products
Towels and everyday household essentials
Laundry supplies
Socks and undergarments
Journals and handwritten notes of encouragement
Gift cards for food, transportation, or other immediate needs
Practical items for school, work, or independent living
A special “Dream Gift” designed to support or inspire their next step

The transition out of foster care can already feel uncertain.

Since beginning this work, The Knighten Project has provided hundreds of young people with brand-new suitcases filled with necessities, encouragement, and tangible reminders that someone believes in their future.
